How to involve kids in your emergency preparations

Getting kids involved with putting together your emergency kit and plan is the first step to ensuring that they know what to do in the event of an actual emergency. Here are a few tips to get you started:

Contribute to your family’s emergency kit: Ask them about the kinds of foods and items that they would like to include in your family kit. Examples could include games, booweb-sm-kid1-greenks, cards, or favorite non-perishable foods.

Pack a go bag: Use an old backpack or pillow case to create a go bag just for them. If you need to leave in a hurry this should have a few essential items such as a change of clothes, a sturdy pair of shoes, some water, a phone list, a family photo, and some food (e.g. trail mix).

Make a date: Have the kiddos help pick a date to switch out your emergency kit’s supplies and to practice your home evacuation plan. Be sure to have them mark it on your family calendar!

Don’t forget your pets! Kids can also help prepare plans and disaster kits for family pets.
