Service Line Inventory

Service Line Inventory

While the likelihood of lead service lines in CRW’s system is very slim, we are still required to complete the inventory by October of 2024.  CRW needs assistance from you to meet the requirement of reporting your service line material (lead vs. non-lead) to the EPA.  We are able to gather information on CRW service lines between the water main and the meter, but the line between the meter and the home is more difficult for CRW to access and inspect as it is owned by the customer.

We are asking customers with homes built prior to 1986 to self-identify their service line type (lead or non-lead) for CRW by completing the form linked below.

How do I find this information?

Typically, you can find this information on written proof of your service line construction or replacement- like a plumbing receipt or a building permit.

OR

You can provide physical verification:

1) Locate a visible section of your water service line anywhere between the meter and your house (look in your garage, basement, crawlspace). There may be exposed pipe on the private side of the meter within the meter box, however, this is often a short “tailpiece” that connects the meter to your private plumbing. Pick a point past the “tailpiece” on your side of the property line or public utility easement.  This may require carefully digging down to the private plumbing, which is typically around 2-feet below ground level in this area.

2) Carefully inspect the pipe. Some pipe materials like plastic are easily recognizable.  If the pipe is metal, gently scratch the pipe with a key or coin.  If the scratch is a shiny silver color, the pipe could be lead.

3) Place a magnet on the pipe (a strong refrigerator magnet will suffice). If the magnet sticks, the pipe is NOT lead.  If it is a silvery/gray colored metal and not magnetic, it is likely a lead pipe.

4) Take a clear photo of the service line where you inspected it.
